She grew up on tiny Lsel Station, a space station near extremely important jumpgates that allow the Teixcalaanli people to travel easily to other parts of the galaxy. Mahit Dzmare is just 26 years old, and she’s been named ambassador to the mighty Teixcalaanli Empire. But let me give it a shot anyway, because the best way to read this book is to know almost nothing about what happens after its first few chapters. It’s difficult to talk about A Memory Called Empire without spoiling some of its best surprises because the core of the book sounds impossibly dry. Or, if you prefer, it’s an impressively wonky novel about galactic geopolitics that just happens to feature spaceships and aliens. It’s a grand, galaxy-spanning space opera that is mostly about diplomacy. Familiarity breeds contempt, unless it’s interesting - which is precisely what Julie Orringer’s novel is. Though the media tries its best to deliver the freshest story or the juiciest gossip, it does get tiring to read of things that will never happen to us, or about things that happen to us all the time. Besides that endangered group of individuals who will have an easier time getting through the Pearly Gates, if the rest of us could read of our sins and struggles in broadsheet or tabloid, we’d see the decline of a lot more media empires. Implications for theory, research, and practice are discussed. ![]() Furthermore, we argue that factors within the organizational context – such as human resource practices and leadership, as well as personal resources – such as self-efficacy and optimism, moderate the effectiveness of these strategies. We propose that workers may use four self-determination strategies to satisfy their basic needs, facilitate flow experiences, and, in turn, increase their job performance: self-leadership, job crafting, designing work to be playful, and strengths use. We use self-determination theory to argue that all human beings have basic needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as well as an inherent tendency towards proactivity and growth. In this article, we propose that workers may also proactively create their own optimal experiences. ![]() In an organizational context, research has predominantly focused on situational predictors of flow – including challenge job demands and resources. This short film (below) sheds further light on what happened. I still remember the veterans who had been subject to the blasts being interviewed on TV news broadcasts. Not long afterwards, in 1985, the McClelland Royal Commission investigated secret British nuclear tests on Australian soil, including Maralinga, in the 1950s. (The band’s singer, Peter Garrett, even went on to stand for the Nuclear Disarmament Party although he didn’t get voted in.) I bought it upon release in 1984 and remember feeling incredibly impassioned by the lyrics, which were filled with political messages about the nuclear threat we all faced. I still remember the terrifying image, depicting Sydney Harbour after a nuclear strike, on the front cover of Red Sails in the Sunset, an album by Australian rock band Midnight Oil.
